cocoa buckwheat crispies by kalejunkie



1 cup Bob’s Redmill Buckwheat Groats
2 tb cacao powder
2 tb maple syrup
2 tb melted coconut oil
Sprinkle of cinnamon

Let’s face it, as a kid you loved Cocoa Crispies Cereal. Maybe you still do–heck, I do! But I don’t want all that sugar in my diet, and I strive to find healthier alternatives to my favorite childhood treats when I can. Hence, this recipe. 

You might be thinking, what is BUCKWHEAT? Well for starters, it’s not WHEAT, which makes it naturally gluten-free. Buckwheat groats are the hulled seeds of the buckwheat plant, and their taste is quite mild. Buckwheat groats look and taste a lot like steel cut oats and can be enjoyed raw! When roasted, they take on a slightly more intense flavor, and lots of crunch!

Try this recipe for CACAO BUCKWHEAT CRISPIES and thank me later. You will sprinkle them on your smoothie bowls and eat them straight out of the jar. They are THAT good, and even the kids will enjoy them!

Recipe will make 1 cup of crispies. They will keep for up to one week in an airtight container. No refrigeration necessary.


makes 1 cup of crispies


Preheat oven to 375.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a bowl, add all the ingredients and mix with a spoon.
Pour mixture onto baking sheet.
Bake for 20-25 minutes, watching closely to make sure they don’t burn.
Mine are always perfectly done and crunchy at 20 minutes! Enjoy!
